If you've lived in Nashville long enough, you know Donelson doesn't get nearly enough credit. Tucked just east of the airport and a world away from the honky-tonks on Broadway, it's a neighborhood that runs on regulars: people who know their server's name and have a usual order. Darfon's, sitting on Elm Hill Pike since 1989, is exactly that kind of place.
Family-owned and operated for over 35 years, Darfon's has quietly outlasted trends, new openings, and the wave of "elevated" everything that's swept through Nashville. The menu stretches comfortably across traditional American, New American, and classic steakhouse territory, the kind of range that tells you this kitchen has figured out what it's good at and isn't in a rush to reinvent itself.
The dining room feels like a proper sit-down restaurant should: unhurried, dimly lit in the right places, and staffed by people who seem like they actually want to be there. Walk-ins are always welcome at the bar, and reservations are easy to snag for lunch or dinner through their website.

The Prime Rib Au Jus Sandwich is straightforward in the best possible way: thinly sliced prime rib, tender and just the right shade of pink, piled onto a sturdy roll and served with a side of rich, savory au jus for dipping. No gimmicks, no unnecessary toppings fighting for attention. What sets it apart is the quality of the meat itself. Prime rib is easy to get wrong (too dry, too fatty, too aggressively seasoned), but Darfon's hits the balance that makes it worth going back for. The au jus is deep and beefy without being salty, and dipping the sandwich into it turns a good lunch into a great one. It's the kind of dish that reminds you why old-school American restaurant cooking, done well, never really goes out of style.
